Rayyanah Barnawi became the first Saudi female astronaut on Ax-2; where is she now?

On May 21, 2023, Rayyanah Barnawi soared into history as the first Saudi female astronaut, embarking on a groundbreaking journey as part of Axiom Mission 2 (Ax-2). Her mission to the International Space Station (ISS) was not only a personal triumph but also a monumental step forward for Saudi Arabia and women in STEM fields worldwide. Barnawi’s presence in space served as a powerful symbol of inspiration, demonstrating that the sky is not the limit but just the beginning.

During her time on the space station, Barnawi dedicated herself to pioneering scientific research, focusing on critical areas such as stem cell and breast cancer studies. Her experiments aimed to unravel the mysteries of how microgravity influences biological processes, potentially leading to revolutionary advancements in medical science. Additionally, she conducted vital research on the behavior of immune cells in space, providing invaluable data that could transform our understanding of health and disease.

Upon her return to Earth, Barnawi’s passion for science and her commitment to inspiring future generations did not wane. She spearheaded the creation of BioGravity, a new initiative sponsored by the Saudi Space Agency. This Community of Practice, the first of its kind in the Middle East, is dedicated to advancing microgravity research and significantly enhancing Saudi Arabia’s capabilities in space-related biosciences.

“True exploration goes beyond borders and boundaries,” said Barnawi. “Through BioGravity, we are creating a collaborative space fueled by curiosity and a quest to unveil the mysteries of our universe, all in the pursuit of a brighter future for humanity.”

Barnawi presents at the first BioGravity workshop on Oct. 28.

BioGravity aims to cultivate a collaborative environment where scientists and researchers in the biomedical field can share knowledge and develop innovative space research experiments. This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s vision of investing in human capital and fostering scientific excellence. By creating a platform for the exchange of knowledge and techniques, both locally and globally, Bio Gravity is set to propel the kingdom to the forefront of space research.

Barnawi’s journey and her ongoing efforts underscore the importance of diversity and inclusion in space exploration. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the limitless potential of human ingenuity. As she continues to pave the way for future scientists and explorers, Barnawi remains a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change, proving that with determination and vision, we can reach for the stars.

Barnawi’s second BioGravity workshop will take place on Nov. 18. You can watch the livestream here.
