The Ax-1 astronauts were the first in a new class of pioneers stepping forth to lay the groundwork for Axiom Station and the full realization of low Earth orbit's possibilities. The Ax-1 astronauts conducted extensive research and STEM outreach. Their efforts aligned with how each philanthropist carries out his work at home, in service to all on Earth and to all who follow them beyond it.
Relive the excitement of the Ax-1 Mission - a 17 day research and outreach packed mission that was the the in a new class of pioneers
The Ax-1 crew safely splashed down off the coast of Florida aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft at 1:06 p.m. ET on April 25, 2022
The Ax-1 crew undocked from the International Space Station's Harmony module at 9:10 p.m. ET, completing their time aboard the orbiting laboratory and readying for the return to Earth.
The hatch between the SpaceX Dragon Endeavour spacecraft and the ISS closed at approximately 7:26p.m. ET, Sunday, April 24, the start of readying the vehicle for undocking for the Ax-1 crew’s return to Earth.
Axiom Space’s Axiom Mission 1 (Ax-1) was the first all-private astronaut mission to the International SpaceStation (ISS) and a pivotal step toward Axiom Station, the world’s first commercial space station. The multinational, four-person crew participated in a 17-day mission, including working and living on the orbiting laboratory. Axiom Space has contracted SpaceX to transport the crew via a Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket.
Axiom Mission 1 was a research-focused mission, setting the standard for future private astronaut crews.
The first all-private astronaut mission to the International Space Station, with a multinational crew of four, ushered in a new phase of microgravity research for new government and non-government entrants around the world. The mission included more than 25 science and research investigations during 17 days aboard the ISS, as well as collection of pre- and post-launch physiological data collection.
Ax-1 was the first of several proposed missions to the ISS and a critical step toward Axiom Station, the world’s first commercial space station. Axiom Station aims to serve as a hub for research and commercial activities, helping to fully realize low-Earth orbit’s possibilities, while benefitting future deep space human spaceflight and improving life on Earth.
Ax-1 is the first of several planned Axiom missions to the International Space Station and an important step toward Axiom’s goal of constructing a private space station in low-Earth orbit that can serve as a global academic and commercial hub.
Axiom’s multinational crew of four private astronauts will travel in a SpaceX Crew Dragon. During their 17-day mission, the crew spent 16 days on the International Space Station conducting scientific research. The more than 25 different experiments were made possible by Axiom Space’s full-service integration into the NASA process for science and technology activities.
